enveri: (I like cooking. Mainly toast.)
I find it amusingly ironic that I have had very little appetite for the last 3 days (although the ice cream [livejournal.com profile] roho got me last night was ohh soo good), I can't stop thinking about food.

I've plotted out the Big Meal for next weekend, and I've decided on the menu for the next time we manage to kidnap [livejournal.com profile] shadowstalkerw for the weekend.

Last weekend when we were house sitting, I made my first ever homemade french loaf, which I then turned into sinfully delicious garlic bread. I'll never buy another baguette again. Also, these Olive Garden commercials are driving me nuts. I find Olive Garden's food to be rather underwhelming, and I know the idea of puff pastry and cheese isn't a new one, but their sofatellis just sound so mouth-wateringly good, and are begging to be made at home.

So anyway. Yes. Very much not hungry, been slightly nauseous all day, but... watching Food Network and thinking about food. There is something wrong with me.

Quote of the Day:

"A man once said "I am brave because I have no fear". This is a paradox. As bravery is courage in the face of fear, if one has no fear to face in the first place, one cannot be brave." -- Polinesia

Art News:

I had an idea for a larger art project yesterday, and I'm hoping to start on it soon. I've finished my first painting for August (yay!), but I don't think I'm going to manage to duplicate July's productivity. I'm beginning to worry about being able to fill two panels at MFF, but I figure I have two months to crack out some new art... right? Right.

It's looking very good that I'll be attending FurFright, and I'm psyched about that. I won't have a dealer's table, but I'd rather be in the Alley for my first time at this con.

Current Projects:

Today is more help over at Duncan and Takaza's place. We got alot done yesterday, hoping to get more done today.

I'm going to start using some of my free time at home to work on our house projects, as I'm getting motived again to see our place look the way I want it to.

Nifty things:

4 Exotic Fruits to Try This Weekend -- It all looks good til she gets to the Durian. I don't think there's enough money in the world to make me try that. :P

Are Freshwater Fish as Healthy to Eat? -- Consumer Reports examines the nutritional values of freshwater fish vs saltwater fish to determine if one is as good as the other. I'm allergic to seafood, so this is a moot question for me... but some of you might find it interesting.

What are you guys up to this weekend?

Have a great day!

Serious Eats apparently did a city restaurant guide for Chicago. I don't get down to the city to eat terribly much, but there are some familiar names on the list. Some of the others... I definitely want to check out. Yum!

Oh-em-gee. I made foccacia bread to go with the beef and barley soup I had on the menu for dinner tonight. The bread requires an 18 hour rise, but wow, it was worth it! It's soft and chewy and oh-so-yummy with the kosher salt and fennel seeds on the top. Num! The soup was good, and a little frustrating, as after 2 hours of cooking on the stove, the carrots are still on the wrong side of al dente, and even the celery still had some crunch. I prefer my vegetables to be on the soft side in soups, so when I do the leftovers, I'll probably cook it a bit longer. The soup itself is delightfully velvety and tomato-y, and the little barley bits reminded me of spaghettios, of all things. I will definitely make it again. :9

Dinner tonight was homemade pierogis in a garlic butter sauce with jalepeno corn muffins. The muffins didn't really go with the rest of the meal, but... wow. For as labor intensive as the pierogis were, they came out really tasty, and I have a bunch in the freezer now for some evening I don't feel like cooking. :9

Hmm. When looking at food processors... Do we go with the 3 1/2 cup size, or the 9 cup? I'm not sure we'd really use the full capacity of the 9c model, and it's over $100 more expensive... Hm.

I've been making more of an effort to cook in the evenings lately, and I think it's really starting to pay off. Last Friday, I made chicken tikka masala (with homemade naan), and tonight was stuffed chicken breasts and roasted potatoes.

Moto looks like an interesting Chicago eatery (was featured on Food Network) but... I really don't think I want to pay $115-175 just for the novelty. (although their dessert nachos look quite yummy)

So for [livejournal.com profile] roho's birthday, I wanted to make something special.

So, I made beignets!

So, for the past week, I've been on a 'fresh food' kick. No more copping out and eating cereal or frozen dinners for our evening meals; that sort of thing. Soooo.. as part of that, I figured I'd post some of the things I've been trying (as part of this effort, I'm trying to push myself out of my normal cooking comfort zones) and the reviews.

I've lost myself for the last several hours browsing through http://www.tastespotting.com, food porn of the highest magnitude (Darn you, [livejournal.com profile] haikujaguar! My productivity has gone down the drain!)

It's been fun looking through recipes and thinking of meals to make. I have been cooking more, and it's been really nice to have homemade meals (and the subsequent leftovers) to enjoy. I just need to find a way to organize my recipes.

I have some art to scan; I did birthday sketches for a couple of friends, and a few other things artwise I'm working on. I have about a month left before starting school, so it's going to be a busy few weeks.
