I just finished Dragon Age II.

I feel... like I sometimes do when I've walked out of a really powerful movie. Moved, emotional... crying a little.

It was an excellent game. I missed a few things, but.. Yeah. I think next, I will play through Origins again, then do another run through of II.

Bioware.. if you -ever- do a Dragon Age MMO... You have at least one guaranteed subscriber.

If anyone out there is looking for a powerfully immersive and fun single player fantasy RPG.. I cannot recommend the Dragon Age series enough.

DA 1 and 2 are the only games I've played in the last 5 years. :) I LOVE that sort of game, wish there were more out there!

A friend of ours introduced us to Origins... last year? Year before? She had a spare copy and gave it to me. We had played D&D together and she thought I'd enjoy it. I lost track of how many hours I lost.

I really REALLY wanted DA2 when it was released, but at the time I wasn't working and couldn't justify the cost. Time went on, I forgot about buying it until a few weeks ago. I think I've done nothing else with my spare time. >.>

Yeah, I never buy games till they come down to the $10-20 range so I'm always years behind. My rule is I only get to play games when I get sick (which is thankfully not very often!) so I have something to look forward to when I'm stuck in bed for a few days. :)

They play so much like novels that I have a really hard time putting them down!

whoops!

Yeah, I do too, obviously! I played some Origins last night and I have to say, I -definitely- prefer 2's gameplay style.

I KNOWS YOUR SECRET SOCK NOW, BWAHAHAHAHA. >_>

I actually liked Origins' storyline a lot better. It felt more epic than DA2, and there are some things that I definitely missed from Origins. Like the ability to sit in camp and yabber at your partymates forever. DEAR GODS. I think Alistair and Leliana were probably mumbling "DOES THIS CHICK EVER SHUT UP?" after awhile. *whistles* I really HATED that you only got specific spots to take with your companions in DA2, though I realize they probably did that because of the sheer amount of voice acting that would've needed to be done otherwise. But I still miss it!

But the combat system, omg. Some people complained that it was "too easy", but having party members that were reasonably intelligent and didn't require micromanaging for every. single. fight. really makes DA2 a lot more replayable, imo. I play RPGs for the story, not the combat. I was actually reading a review of DA2 that complained that it was like teensy bits of combat and action smushed in between the story, and I was like... but that's why I like it! It's like an interactive novel. I adore it.

I've tried to go back and replay Origins and as much as I love the game, I have a very difficult time going through the goddamn pain in the ass combat system over and over. Because even on easy, the fights are still fucking hard, and it still requires a lot of thought, and DAMMIT MY STORY GIMME. DA2, I have played through like three times now. They really streamlined the combat system a lot, and it's much more user friendly (I suppose by this I mean "mostly ignorable") now. :P

That.. sums things up pretty well. I kept trying to initiate conversations with my companions while we were running around, and was disappointed when I couldn't have random conversations with them. (But the banter they had with each other.. oh god! When Aveline called Isabella a whore, I just about died.)

I loved the combat system, and.. I honestly -liked- Kirkwall. I felt like it was easier having a hub. I wouldn't have minded if a DLC meant you could go to another city or something, but I really liked the Day/Night Kirkwall, Outer Regions etc indicating where your quests were on the map. That made it much much easier.

I've played through level 14 as a rogue, and finished the game as a warrior. I am thinking I'll do my next play through as a mage. :)

OOOH! So glad to hear you like the game. We will gave to DA geek sometime.

To avoid spoilers I'm just asking for a yes or a no but I'm curious... near the end when you needed to make the choice... did you kill him?

whoopsie, sock account. >.>

I couldn't. He looks too much like Alistair, we had completed the romance (I was trying to romance someone else, and it happened by accident, but.. I was like, 'WELL THEN!')

And.. I thought about it, and when someone you love does something..misguided, you don't lop off their head.

(I am a horrible RP nerd.)

But man.. that final battle. She meant well! It was scary in a lot of ways.

I read the Bioware forums and you would be so surprised to see how many people said he was nothing but a terrorist, even though he'd been trying and watching and quietly helping for almost a decade. What he did was horrible but.... what other option did he have?

(Fandom opinion is also sharply divided about Merrill. Some people think she's a cute little thing and needs protecting, some people think she has her head so shoved in that little denial hole in the sand that she can see what they're doing on the other side of Thedas. Me... I'm in the latter camp.)

I... really didn't like Merrill. The romance option felt.. creepy and wrong, and her steadfast obliviousness to consequences made me want to reach into the screen and smack her several times.

That final big quest with the mirror? Yeaaah, NOT HAPPY with her. I liked KM.

And.. I don't agree with what he did, but.. he did what he thought he had to. And like you said, he had been trying to effect change for 10 years only to have the situation get worse and worse. I can see why he thought that was his only option. (And the interactions when you forgive him, agh, it tore at my heart. So sweet!)

YES! I wanted to smack the living crap out of her sometimes. "If you're happy and you know it... slash your wrists!" ARBLRFNGH!!!

I think I might be Bioware's slave for the next year. Between The Old Republic, both Mass Effect games, and actually finishing Dragon Age Origins...yeah, I'll be a busy gamer. >

What about it is so interesting for you?

I tried to get into it, but kept feeling a little outside of it.
(people kept claiming that if you like the Mass Effect series, you'l like Dragon Age, but I don't agree, yet)

2 was definitely more immersive to me than 1 was. Part of that was, I guess, the voice acting. I liked pairing up the characters, so the romance options were fun. I enjoy roleplay, and playing the game was like RP with myself.

Beyond that.. the setting was very very detailed and rich. I read through all the codex entries I got, so I felt like I was playing through a Choose Your Adventure novel, and that appealed to me alot.

I feel like Mass Effect would be the same for me; I'd really -want- to be into it, but.. the setting just wouldn't be for me. I definitely prefer fantasy over science fiction.
