To make up for yesterday's vitriol.. over the weekend I had to go to the Cambridgeport Mall, which is a large, upscale mall right on the border between Cambridge and Boston proper.

I had various errands (apple store, shoe store, etc) and while I was running them, I happened upon a truly gorgeous Santa. His beard was full and real, his clothing expensive and tailored, belt and boots were, if not real leather, good enough fakes to look it.

As I approached, he was speaking to a mall employee, then stopped, looking behind him. A wide smile spread across his face and he crossed my path, his attention focused behind a pillar. When I got there, I saw a child. A girl no more than 5 or 6, who was... enraptured at meeting Santa. He knelt beside her and spoke to her a few moments, and I was immensely touched at the joy of a child. I wiped tears from my cheeks as I continued on my business, and several days later, am still musing on the nature of happiness, and wondering when we lose that... overflowing-cup-of-joy from childhood.

Respectfully disagree here. See, Santa up in a chair at the head of a long crowd is very impersonal, but Santa actually stopping to talk to you, just somewhere in the mall behind a support pillar, that's special. I think an adult would be as overjoyed by the equivalent.

Good point!

Either way, she's still making me smile several days later. (and get a little sniffly, because it WAS a beautiful moment)

Is that mall also known as the Cambridge Side Galleria? :) I used to live like 4 blocks from it and spent ALOT of time there in my early 20's. (Can't believe that was over 10 years ago OMG!) I miss that place! I used to cut through by the canal on my way to and from the Science Museum when I worked there.

That's the one! I was meeting Will and others for a stroll through the Science Museum afterwards, so I just parked at the mall so I could do a few errands there then amble over. :)

We ended up walking down by the Garden to scowl at the crowds of people thronging the sidewalks for the Bruins game, then retreated back to Somerville for dinner. :)

Awe man! That brings back so many old memories! I remember when they were the only place in the north east with a Cheesecake Factory! I used to sit on the benches at the canal and feed the sparrows. :) Now I want to go there on my visit home for Christmas!

It's disturbingly close to my office (I work in the old Schrafft complex in Charlestown), and is the most convenient pet store for us now. :)
